If you’re like me and a few hundred thousand others, the Neptune Boardwalk Weekend is one of your favorite weekends of the entire year. It’s usually a little bit cooler but still sunny (although I can remember several years when it was actually hot) and walking the boardwalk to take in the art show, the sandcastle competition and all the other sights is a absolute treat. Boardwalk Weekend begins on the last Friday of September (today!) and is the largest annual special event in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a matter of fact, it’s rated as one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association and among the Top 20 Events in the Southeastern US by the Southeast Tourism Society. Getting excited yet?!

Earlier this week, Bloomberg Businessweek Magazine announced the 50 best places to live in America. We are ecstatic to report that Virginia Beach ranked eighth! Woo-hoo!!!
One of the outstanding features noted that set us apart from other cities in the country and helped us rank in the top ten is our “thousands of acres of parks.” It’s true: we have an incredible 249 parks in Virginia Beach, spanning more than 4000 acres! And while those are impressive stats, what’s even more impressive is how these parks are maintained and operated, and diversity and variety of the programs, events and acitivities developed for our residents and guests. No matter what your age or taste, there is something for everyone happening almost every day of the year at one of our parks or recreation centers.

There are special places you return to in your heart time and time again, and for my 8-year-old son Nathaniel and I, one of them is Great Neck Park.
Years of memories are tucked behind every corner of this sprawling, 70-acre park situated along the banks of the Lynnhaven Bay. Its wooded pathways and scenic gazebo bay view hooked my son and I from the beginning, and each season change always brings forth new points of wonder.
Before my son was born, I had only visited Great Neck Park once with my husband Skip. That was 16 years ago and my how things have changed. Little did I realize that one day I would be wheeling a stroller down those paths and marveling at my infant son’s first reactions to the rustling of leaves, the scampering of squirrels, and the melodies of birds. What a sensory delight!
Together we’ve explored every inch of this special park, hunting down leaves for Fall Cub Scout projects, gathering sticks for our fireplace, playing baseball, and nurturing our mutual love of sunsets and photography.

After getting my first Nikon DSLR a couple years ago, I happily handed over my compact camera to Nathaniel. We headed out one evening to see if we could take some pretty sunset photos. I was so excited about my expensive new toy that I honestly was not paying attention the photos my son was taking with that small camera. That night, we uploaded our photos and watched the magic explode on the computer screen. My son managed to capture some pretty extraordinary sunset views and entered one of them into the citywide Reflections Contest for visual arts. To our delight he won second place and as a result became even more interested in taking photographs.
It’s a magical thing to witness the very beginnings of a child’s passions. I hope my son will continue to love photography and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. That one photograph he took at Great Neck Park further sparked our interest in capturing interesting cloud formations, sunrises and sunsets. I recently compiled our efforts and shared them online at Daily Epiphanies—a personal blog dedicated to photography and everyday miracles.

I know one thing for certain—Great Neck Park will continue to be a special place for my son. It’s where he progressed from stroller to bike in the blink of an eye. Where he first learned to ride that bike without training wheels and where he slammed his first baseball. Recently Nathaniel and his Dad went for a walk at the park. As they approached the gazebo, he turned to my husband and said, “that would be a cool place to get married.” Something tells me we will be returning to this sacred space for a very long time—perhaps one day for a wedding!

After an extremely warm summer, I welcomed the crisp air this morning as opened the back door to let my dogs out. Actually, as I walked across the deck I hollered “YES!” with my hands reaching toward the sky; I just wanted to kiss Mother Nature right on the lips!! I’m sure anyone who saw me thought I was having a seizure or something, but for me it was downright glorious to be smacked in the face with some cool air for a change. Don’t get me wrong – I love summer – but I also like the change of seasons and my favorite time of the year is the transition months of fall as we head into winter. That’s what is so awesome about living in Virginia Beach - we get opportunity to experience the change of seasons while enjoying pretty good weather all year long.

Not only does Virginia Beach offer almost year-round recreational family fishing, but for those anglers with a competitive nature, several tournaments take place annually. In addition to great camaraderie and sport, some of these tournaments assure BIG payouts. Serious anglers come here to follow the fish to the money. One example is the recently concluded Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament which yielded payouts of $244,500 in a Hurricane Irene shortened event featuring 45 boats. Among other upcoming tournaments, consider the Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout January 5 -7, 2012. Last year’s rockfish tournament winnings totaled $145,740.
No boat? No problem! Just book one of our local expert charter captains and let them put you in the thick of the action!

Thanks to social media and the power of the press, we’ve been able to communicate to the world this week that the city of Virginia Beach is alive and kicking following Hurricane Irene. Monday morning, we hit the boardwalk and the inlet and took photos showing it was “business as usual” in Virginia Beach. We wanted everyone to see visiting families trudging everything but the kitchen sink to the beach and anxious fisherman hoping for “the big one” at First Street. Later in the week, we featured outdoor cafes on the boardwalk serving the lunch crowds and would-be parasailers gearing up for a high-flying adventure. We showcased couples enjoying our unique shops and restaurants and novice kayakers learning how to manuever in the sea. We blogged about our good fortune on our website, VisitVirginiaBeach.com. Our mayor even appeared on a national business news program to tell the world all was well in his city. All this in an attempt to prove that Labor Day Weekend 2011 was still “on” in Virginia Beach. Well, by George, it looks like it worked………you’re here!
