King Neptune
King Neptune
Ruler of the Sea & Virginia Beach Renaissance Man
The original Old Salt and an advocate for the aquatic things in life, King Neptune has been Living the Life in Virginia Beach since the Atlantic Ocean was just a puddle. A self-proclaimed expert in the beach life, there isn’t an appetizer he hasn’t tasted, an adventure he hasn’t dominated or a nap he hasn’t taken on the shores of Virginia Beach. If you don’t believe him, he’d be happy to tell you about it (and everything else under the sun). On May 10, 2005, a 32-foot statue of King Neptune was built in his honor at Neptune Park on 31st street. Legend has it that he was so grateful for this enshrinement that he vowed to watch over and be the voice of Virginia Beach forever. In his spare time, King Neptune enjoys "getting his bronze on" at the boardwalk, people watching, being in the background of pictures, listening to live music and playing air guitar with his trident.

Summer is coming. Are you ready?

Monday, April 9th, 2012 by King Neptune

King Neptune vertical - Greenburg full usageAs the last bit of morning frost makes its exodus off my bronzed brow, my king-sized heart begins to flutter with excitement as summer planning season has finally risen to greet me like a Virginia Beach sunrise. Yes my friends, it’s that beloved time of year again when the sun of spring foreshadows the amazing beach season that lies ahead. But now is not the time to rest on your beach towels and relish in the moment. No, we must be diligent in our summer planning to ensure we get the most beach life for our buck. So to help you get started, I’ve put together a Neptune plan of action to tackling summer.

First things first, you need to have a smile on your face while reading this plan. After all, summer is the world’s greatest creation since the King Neptune statue at Thirty-first Street.

Like any great endeavor, you need to have a home base. Virginia Beach has a king’s bounty of places to stay, from amazing ocean side hotels to welcoming vacation rental homes. It’s best to find out what works best for your brood, and your budget, and plan accordingly.

The King of All New Year’s Resolutions

Thursday, January 5th, 2012 by King Neptune

King Neptune vertical - Greenburg full usageThe holidays have blown through my little slice of heaven like a sand storm of love, wrapping paper, and over-stuffed tummies, leaving in its wake an ocean-sized void to fill.  You see, for me, the last 3 months of every year are packed to the pales with party planning, gift shopping, and juggling schedules to meet my family’s busy demands. Once that’s done, I’m left here on the boardwalk alone to reflect on what waits buried under the sandcastle of potential that is 2012 and uncover this year’s New Year’s resolution. Of course, I am King Neptune, and have no flaws, so it wouldn’t make sense for me to think about what I could change in my life since I’m perfect and all. Well, that and the fact that I’m a statue and all of my traits are set in stone. But I’m more than happy to throw around a few ideas to help motivate you to reach your potential in 2012.

By the Fire Pits: A Very Neptune Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 by King Neptune

King

As the last light bulb is set into the impressive boardwalk holiday light structure that surrounds my perch, I can’t help but think, “The holidays? Already?!”  Not a second passes before my chiseled Adam’s Apple makes a free fall into the pit of my stomach as it dawns on me like a glorious Virginia Beach sunrise that I’ve totally neglected my Thanksgiving planning. And wouldn’t you have it, I’m hosting the entire Neptune family this year! Lucky for me, I’m King Neptune, so everything is under control. Of course, you’re not me, so I’ve put together a little Gobble Guide to help make sure your Thanksgiving is a cornucopia of fun.

The Man, the Myth, the Statue

Monday, November 7th, 2011 by King Neptune

King Neptune vertical - Greenburg full usageAs yet another ridiculously beautiful Virginia Beach sunrise gently caresses the salt-kissed brow of my stoic scowl, I begin to ponder what’s left for me to conquer as King of these hallowed shores. Then, like a discombobulated seagull, it hits me. I shall shed my magnificently bronzed exterior and open up Davy Jones’s locker of mind-blowing local knowledge to the visitors of Virginia Beach. And so we begin our journey into the soul of me, King Neptune.

Like any storied writer, I have my influences–Twain, Hawthorne, the Shorelines bloggers. So I have channeled my inner Poe in the writing of this, my first of many randomly awesome blog entries.

Once upon a sunrise pretty, while I blogged this, bright and cheery,

Over a 3-mile boardwalk and curious picture-takers galore,

While I stand motionless, nearly frozen, suddenly there came some clapping,

As of some family gently laughing, laughing on my favorite shore.

“Just take the picture,” I muttered, “laughing on my favorite shore-

Living the beach life here, evermore.”

Maybe poetry isn’t my beach bag, but living the life is. Check back soon as I drop some local knowledge from 32 feet above sea level. Be sure to check out the posts from the other awesomely articulate Shorelines bloggers as we take you beyond the sandcastles of Virginia Beach as you know it and dig into a world of coastal charm you never knew existed.
