What is it with kids and climbing? From the time they’re old enough to get one foot up on the furniture they just seem to have a “thing” about it.
At Mount Trashmore Park’s new Kids Cove playground, kids who love to climb can reach new heights. There are ladders of all sizes and types, colorful rock walls of varying dimensions and brown faux boulders stacked higher than some moms might be comfortable with – all there for the climbing.

Shipwrecks, disasters, rescues, heroes…even a ghost story? What’s not to like!
Soon after my daughter, Jennifer, and I walked through the doors of the Old Coast Guard Station Museum and Gift Shopat the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, we realized we were visiting a special time and place in Virginia’s history. A time when surfmen, as these brave men were called, patrolled the beaches and stood watch day and night over Virginia’s coast. They were ready to spring to action and battle the sea to save lives should a ship and its crew get into trouble.
On a recent Sunday visit we caught up with volunteer docent, Miss Ann, a wealth of knowledge, already leading a young couple on a tour. She pointed out how communication devices, navigational aids and weather forecasting methods have come a long way since the early days (1874-1915) of the U.S. Life Saving Service, later renamed the U.S. Coast Guard.
Jennifer and I were captivated by the early lifesaving equipment, the surfboat and especially a small scale model demonstrating what was called the Breeches Buoy.

Winter is in full swing with temperatures dipping to the 30’s this week in Virginia Beach. The holiday spirit is definitely in the air and Santa sightings are everywhere!
Thinking about trying to get an audience with the big guy a bit earlier than December 25? Perhaps you see yourself chatting him up while noshing on Crab Eggs Benedict and home fries, jockeying the crowd for a few private minutes? Sure, you can have breakfast with Santa just about anywhere, but only in Virginia Beach can you hit the water and go sailing with Santa!
Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, guests at the Virginia Aquarium can enjoy some special time with Santa between now and Christmas. Gather
the whole family together and take a 45-minute cruise on Owls Creek with Santa and his crew. Enjoy refreshments, games and activities while Santa greets his guests for a unique photo opportunity. Wouldn’t that shot make a great Christmas card?!
Make your reservations now for a jolly good time by calling (757) 385-0300. But hurry, the final cruises run next Saturday, December 18, at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Ho, Ho, Ho – Live the Life!!!

Note: The Beach Report normally posts each Friday but this week we waited until Monday to highlight the VB Holiday Parade at the Beach post by ShoreLines Blogger Tina Fries. Enjoy!!!
Parade at the Beach Ushers in Santa, Flurries & Holiday Spirit
It promised to be a cold night for Saturday’s Holiday Parade at the Beach — cold enough to snow (!) so, my daughter, Jennifer, her pal, Abbi, and I bundled up with layers to which we are unaccustomed in Hampton Roads. Out came the boots, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens and we headed out to secure a spot on Atlantic Avenue.
Despite the large crowd, we found a great spot on Atlantic in front of a lamppost. I realized I had forgotten a blanket for the girls to sit on so I was glad to see two sand bags lying near the curb, no doubt put there by the city in case the weather got severe.
The parade was a huge hit with all of us, complete with marching bands, dance troupes, baton twirlers, Shriners cars, the Monster Fire Truck and numerous big Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade-style helium balloons, which kept our attention. The balloons were in the shape of stars, a candy cane, a wreath, a dinosaur, and my favorite, Frosty the Snowman.

Town and Treat at Virginia Beach’s Town Center was the place to be for Halloween fun this past Saturday! To be honest, I’m not sure who enjoyed the festivities more — my 9-year-old daughter, Jennifer, and her pal, Madison, or Madison’s Mom and me! And we Moms didn’t even get to go trick-or-treating with the merchants.
We had lunch at Jason’s Deli at Pembroke Mall and then headed over around 1:30 p.m. The place was hopping with kids, and quite a few adults, dressed in full costume.

“Why did they build lighthouses again, Mom?”
The question came from my 9-year old daughter, Jennifer, as we were heading into the gift shop to purchase tickets to climb the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse on the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story military installation, formerly known as Fort Story.
“So that ships could see where the land was so they wouldn’t run into it,” I replied, subscribing to the keep it simple philosophy.
“Oh, right, I knew that,” she said in a mature voice.
